Lecture: “The Experimental Hymnody of Herbert Howells”

  • University of the South (map)

A guest lecture at the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee (time to be confirmed)

Among Herbert Howells’s teachers, both Ralph Vaughan Williams and Charles Villiers Stanford composed innovative and enduring hymn tunes. A close examination of the two Howells hymn tunes in The Hymnal 1982, as well as Howells’s other tunes, reveals the creative ways in which he continued to experiment with the English hymn tune form throughout his career.
