The stanzas from the LBW version which are included are 1, 3, 4, the first half of 5, and a modified second half of 6.

The second half of LBW stanza 6 begins: "[And blessed hope to those] Who love the Lord's appearing". This has been changed to "All hail the Lord's appearing!".

Phrases are now contained on a single system of music, rather than being arbitrarily carried to the next line due to barline placement.

This graphical change is odd given that the poetry of the sixth stanza was hammered into a new combined stanza.

240 - Light One Candle to Watch for Messiah

WOV 630.

The text and tune are unchanged.

Layout in the pew edition is improved by removing the accompaniment. The hymn is now much more readable (and much less visually intimidating) to the congregant.

239 - Hark, the Glad Sound

LBW 35.

The text remains unchanged.

The previous 6-4 time signature has been reinterpreted as a more legible 3-4.

Quite apart from the hymn itself, one notices the distinctive choice of listing authorship information at the bottom of the page where the hymn first appears, not at the end of the hymn (on the facing page). A quick glance shows that this practice is continued throughout.

The table of contents

Includes:

What about chairs? Is there a "Chair Edition" for those parishes that prefer that seating format?

Well, no matter. Evangelical Lutheran Worshiplog (ELW) suspects that we might take some heat for looking only at the Pew Edition. But here's what we're up to:

Most people will be using the pew edition, so we are too.

Usability and readability of the pew edition are important. The pew edition should be clear and easy to use. But this is of lesser import than the book's liturgical and musical.

Service music and hymn melodies should be able to stand by themselves. The harmonies provided by other editions are unnecessary.

Jumping ahead a little to the Introduction on page 8:

The pew edition stands alongside a leaders edition and a musical accompaniment editions in print, all of which are needed in order for this worship book to be used to its fullest.

And while we might not necessarily disagree with this, we are not really using the book here at ELW. We are just examining it.

We believe that to be understood to its fullest, one need only look to the pew edition of any hymnal.

So, whether it will be used in the pew or the chair, this is the edition we're talking about at ELW.

The title page

The title page includes (all left-justified):

A large Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) logo.

Below this, small "Evangelical Lutheran" in black italic type.

Below this, large "Worship" in black type.

At the bottom of the page, "Published by Augsburg Fortress" in black type.

The verso of this page includes copyright information as well as the notice that ELW "is commended for use in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America."

Apparently, I can't reproduce anything but "brief quotations". And yes, the Evangelical Lutheran Worshiplog is a "critical article or review". We like to think it's both an article and a review.

The copyright page also includes one more important bit of information: my copy is the "Pew Edition". This is important to our little project. More on this next.

The half-title page

The half-title page (page before the real title page) has a red Evangelical Lutheran Worship logo.

Also to the right of the logo and below "Evangelical Lutheran" is a large "Worship", also in black.

The inside cover

The inside cover is blank, as is the facing page.

The cover

It's red.

Are you ready? Evangelical Lutheran Worship (ELW) is here, and we at Evangelical Lutheran Worshiplog have just received our copy.

The front cover is embossed with the ELW logo. The spine has a silver logo with the word "Worship" underneath.

We think this is a better choice than the word "Evangelical", though "Lutheran" may not have been so bad.

The back is just red.

How many hymns are we giving up from the LBW?

The new Evangelical Lutheran Worship will contain nearly 700 hymns, but it will not include all of the hymns from the Lutheran Book of Worship (LBW) (1978).

192 hymns from the LBW will not be inlcuded in Evangelical Lutheran Worship

Aside from "Silent Night," however, I don't think any of the hymns will be missed greatly.

(I'm just kidding. "Silent Night" is still included.)

There are a few hymns, however, that I feel should have been included. While they may not have been "popular," they are uniquely Lutheran and I believe the editors have erred in leaving them out of the new book. These hymns are bolded in the folling list.

LBW hymns that will not appear in Evangelical Lutheran Worship

22 - The Advent of Our God
(Charles Coffin, 1736; no attempt to keep up appearances here: the very first hymn in the LBW is excluded)

24 - Come, O Precious Ransom
(Johann Gottfried Olearius, 1664)

38 - O Savior, Rend the Heavens Wide
(1623; this is an unfortunate loss of rich, Lutheran Advent imagery)

43 - Rejoice, Rejoice This Happy Morn
(Birgitte Katerine, 1778; this "hymn" has only one stanza)

48 - All Praise to You, Eternal Lord (Martin Luther, 1524)

49 - O Savior of Our Fallen Race (c. 1525)

59 - When Christmas Morn is Dawning (I can't say I'm sad to see this one go)

61 - The Hills Are Bare at Bethlehem

64 - From East to West (this is a loss of a unique, though maybe difficult to sing, Sarum Christmas hymn in English)

66 - Come Rejoicing, Praises Voicing

68 - He Whom Shepherds Once Came Praising (this awkward, lengthy combination of three tunes has fortunately died a natural death)

73 - All Hail to You, O Blessed Morn!

77 - O One with God the Father (perhaps this great pairing of Anglican text and tune didn't belong in a Lutheran hymnal?)

78 - All Praise to You, O Lord

79 - To Jordan Came the Christ, Our Lord (a translation of a text by Martin Luther)

81 - O Cheif of Cities, Bethlehem (a translation of a text by Prudentius, 348-413)

83 - From God the Father, Virgin-Born (Latin office hymn)

85 - When Christ's Appearing Was Made Known (Coelius Sedulius, c. 5th cent.)

86 - The Only Son from Heaven (Elizabeth Cruciger, c. 1500-1535)

93 - Jesus, Refuge of the Weary (Girolamo Savonarola, 1452-1498)

95 - Glory Be to Jesus (a short 18th cent. Italian hymn)

100 - Deep Were His Wounds (William Johnson, b. 1906)

101 - O Christ, Our King, Creator, Lord (Gregory I, 540-604)

103 - O Christ, Thou Lamb of God (Martin Luther possibly had a hand in arranging this single-stanza liturgical piece)

106 - In the Hour of Trial (a self-centered 19th cent. hymn)

110 - At the Cross, Her Station Keeping (a translation of the Stabat Mater)

112/3 - Jesus, in Thy Dying Woes (a 21 stanza "metrical litany")

114 - There Is a Green Hill Far Away (one of Cecil Frances Alexander's hymns on the Creed)

119 - Nature with Open Volume Stands (Isaac Watts, 1674-1748, a little too esoteric? vague?)

120 - Of the Glorious Body Telling (one setting of the Pange Lingua text, "Sing, My Tongue," is already included)

124/5 - The Royal Banners Forward Go (Vexilla Regis prodeunt, first sung November 19, 568)

127 - It Happened on That Fateful Night (Isaac Watts, text was "considerably altered" anyway)

133 - Jesus Lives! The Victory's Won! (similar sentiment and same tune included with "Jesus Lives, My Sure Defense")

138 - He Is Arisen! Glorious Word! (this single-stanza "hymn" was awkwardly set to the "Queen of Chorales" in the LBW)

146 - Rejoice, Angelic Choirs, Rejoice! (this 11th cent. Latin hymn attributed to Augustine was, like the Exultet, sung at the blessing of the Paschal candle)

150 - Make Songs of Joy (a short five-stanza Easter hymn)

152 - Look, Now He Stands (George Utech, 1963)

153 - Welcome, Happy Morning (I've always been a little wary of singing Aurthur Sullivan in church)

155 - Praise the Savior, Now and Ever (this was an English translation of the Swedish translation of the Latin Pange Lingua)

156 - Look, the Sight is Glorious (The Hymnal Companion calls this "among the finest hymns of the English language. Why wouldn't it be included?)

159 - Up through Endless Ranks of Angels (along with his translations, this original hymn of Jaroslav Vajda has been cut)

160 - Filled with the Spirit's Power (first published 1969)

162 - Lord God, the Holy Ghost (first published 1819)

164 - Creator Spirit, by Whose Aid (Veni Creator is included with "Creator Spirit, Heavenly Dove")

167 - Glory Be to God the Father! (Horatius Bonar, first published 1867)

181 - Greet Now the Swiftly Changing Year (a seven-stanza Vadja translation)

182 - Rise, O Children of Salvation (This All Saints' hymn was penned by the first Lutheran pastor ordained in America, Justus Falckner. His ordination marked "the earliest recorded instance of the use of an organ in church services in the United States.")

183 - The Son of God Goes Forth to War (it's probably best to excise this militaristic imagery)

185 - Great God, a Blessing from Your Throne (first published 1880)

186 - How Blessed Is This Place, O Lord (first published 1925)

190 - We Praise You, Lord (first published 1971)

192 - Baptized into Your Name Most Holy (baptism hymn of Johann J. Rambach, 1693-1735, was "considerably altered" in the LBW)

201 - O God of Life's Great Mystery (first published in the LBW)

202 - Victim Divine, Your Grace We Claim (Charles Wesley, 1745)

204 - Cup of Blessing That We Share (first published 1966)

208 - Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared (Samuel Kinner, 1638)

209 - Come, Risen Lord (George Wallace Briggs, 1931)

211 - Here O My Lord, I See Thee (nineteenth cent. self-centeredness, first publishsed 1855)

213 - I Come, O Savior, To Your Table (Friederich Christian Heyder, 1734)

216 - For Perfect Love So Freely Spent (Louis Marchall McDowell, 1972)

223 - In the Quiet Consecration (Constance Headlam, 1913)

225 - Lord Jesus Christ, We Humbly Pray (Henry Eyster Jacobs, 1917)

226 - Draw Near and Take the Body of the Lord (Bangor Antiphonary c.1680-91; did the Sullivan tune doom this text for Lutherans?)

227 - How Blest Are They Who Hear God's Word (Johann Nordahl Brun, 1786)

232 - Your Word, O Lord, Is Gentle Dew (Carl B. Grave, 1825)

236 - When Seed Falls on Good Soil (Norman Peter Olsen, first published in LBW)

238 - God Has Spoken by His Prophets (George Wallace Briggs, 1952)

240 - Father of Mercies, in Your Word (Nicolai Grundtvig, 1817)

243 - Lord, with Glowing Heart (Francis Scott Key, 1823; the unfortunate title of this hymn makes me think of E.T.)

246 - The First Day of the Week (Fred Pratt Green, 1967)

247 - Holy Majesty, before You (Samuel Johan Hedborn, 1812; Stulken: "one of our loftiest hymns of praise")

249 - God Himself Is Present (Gerhard Tersteegen, 1729)

255 - Lord, Receive this Company (Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, 1961; this single-stanza contemporary "hymn" is odd and poorly engraved in the LBW.)

256 - Oh. Sing Jubilee to the Lord (Ulrik Vilheml Koren, 1874)

258 - Hosanna to the Living Lord! (Reginald Heber, 1811)

263 - Abide with Us, Our Savior

264 - When All Your Mercies, O My God

266 - Maker of the Earth and Heaven

268 - Now that the Daylight Fills the Sky

270 - God of Our Life, All-Glorious Lord

273 - O Christ, You Are the Light and Day

283 - O God, Send Heralds

285 - Spirit of God, Sent from Heaven Above

286 - Bow Down Your Ear, Almighty Lord

287 - O Perfect Love

289 - Heavenly Father, Hear Our Prayer

291 - Jesus Sinners Will Receive

298 - One There Is, above All Others (John Newton)

301 - Come to Calvary's Holy Mountain

302 - Jesus, Your Blood and Righteousness

It seems to have been rushed into production because there is a major error in the kit:

from renewingworship.org:

Please note that the labels on the enclosed CDs have been reversed. The one labeled "CD-ROM" is actually the music CD and the one labeled "Holy Communion Audio Sampler" is actually the CD-ROM.

Hymnody, Liturgical Music and FAQ Background Documents

Despite Renewingworship.com's what's new page, it's still a little difficult to keep up with everything posted on the site.

As far as the Evangelical Lutheran Worshiplog staff can ascertain, these documents have been posted recently (i.e., we don't remember seeing them before today, but it seems like they've been there for a month or so).

Background document: Hymnody
Hymnody.rtf

Background document: Liturgical Music
Liturgical_Music.rtf

Background document: Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs.rtf

The FAQ seems particularly useful, if not for congregations, then at least for worship committees. With slight alterations, versions of it could appear in church newsletters.

(We might make our own lay-friendly FAQ soon.)

Summary of Liturgical Review Process

Renewing Worship has finally posted a page about the summary of the liturgical review process. (For those of you keeping track, this is about a month after they said they would post it.)

Summary of the liturgical review process for Evangelical Lutheran Worship [RTF]

From the Conclusion of the document:

As a whole and in most of its parts, the proposed content was judged to be faithful to Scripture, consistent with the church’s historic tradition, reflective of a Lutheran understanding of the use of the means of grace, and accessible to today’s worshiping assembly in both language and style.
